YOUR PRIVACY

Privacy & cookies

You can explore Britain Beneath without accepting analytics cookies.

Optional visitor analytics

If you accept analytics, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand how many people visit, which pages they read and which websites bring them here. Google receives a browser identifier, page paths, visit and engagement information, browser and device details, and an approximate location derived from the connection. Google processes your IP address to provide this service but says it does not log or store individual IP addresses in Google Analytics 4.

Our installation does not send search text, entered postcodes, URL query strings, names or email addresses. Advertising features, Google signals and automatic collection of search, form, video and outbound-link interactions are disabled.

Your choice and cookies

Google Analytics is not loaded before you accept. Rejecting analytics leaves it off. Use Cookie settings in the footer to change your choice or withdraw consent. Withdrawing stops future tracking and removes this site's accessible Google Analytics cookies; it does not erase information already collected.

We remember your choice in your browser's local storage for up to 180 days. Optional cookies named _ga and _ga_… distinguish browsers and sessions, with a maximum lifetime of 180 days in our installation. Clearing browser storage removes your saved preference.

Other services used by the site

Our hosting service processes requests needed to deliver and protect the website. The map requests tiles from the map provider shown in its attribution, and postcode lookups use Postcodes.io. Those requests disclose connection information to the relevant providers; postcode lookup requests contain the postcode you enter. These services work independently of optional Google Analytics.

Google's processing

Google may process analytics information on servers outside the UK. For its handling of information, retention and privacy controls, see Google's privacy policy and Google Analytics privacy information. You can also use Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
