Why this place matters
The mill was built in 1868. Unlike a smock mill, the mill body is supported on a central post and trestle. Historic England records its timber construction; the council adds that it was extensively rebuilt after storm damage in 2003.
This makes Chillenden a useful comparison with Kent’s smock mills. Its structural arrangement and exposed support tell a different engineering story, while reconstruction raises questions about how a working form can survive the loss of historic fabric.

What to look for
Start with the support beneath the mill body rather than with the sweeps. The central post and cross-members help explain what makes a post mill different. Use a scheduled visit to learn which parts were rebuilt and which survive from earlier phases.
Do not describe it as Kent’s only remaining post mill: the old listing and the council’s more recent account differ. The council identifies its open trestle as the particular surviving distinction. That narrower claim is the one we retain.
